Thin Diabetics may be more in danger than obese ones

Thin Diabetics may be more in danger than obese ones

Type 2 diabetes, a condition thought of as a disease of the over- weight and sedentary, also develops in people who aren’t overweight. And it may be deadlier in these normal – weight people, a new study shows.

images (6).jpgIn the study reported in The Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers revived data of more than 2500 people with Type 2 diabetes over decades.

They found that those of normal weight at the time of their diagnoses were twice as likely to die during the study period, compared with those who were overweight or obese.

The researchers could not explain why having a greater BMI (body mass index), might protect someone with diabetes. But they pointed out that doctors may be prone to treating thin diabetics differently from their obese counter parts, and may be less likely to push them to make diet and exercise changes to improve their survival.

“Normal –weight people may be treated less aggressively,” said Mercedes R.Carnethon, the study’s author and professor of preventive medicine at North western University Feinberg School of Medicine. “This is an argument to treat a normal –weight person with diabetes as aggressively as you would treat overweight persons with diabetes.”

The findings also provide evidence that patients with Type 2 diabetes may display what researchers call the obesity paradox, the observation that people certain chronic disease tend to have lower mortality rates if they carry excess pounds. The phenomenon has been documented previously in people with heart failure, hypertension and kidney disease.

“We thought perhaps that the obesity paradox wouldn’t apply to this population, given  the strong association between overweight and diabetes,” Dr Carnethon said.

Carrying excess weight is clearly linked to Type 2 diabetes. Being obese not only makes the disease more likely, but is also linked with worse control of blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol. But minority of Type 2 diabetics (15 % 20) are neither overweight nor obese, phenomenon researchers do not fully understand.

Earlier studies of the obesity paradox may have been flawed because they classified as “normal weight” people in the late stages of disease, Dr Carnethon said. To ensure normal –weight diabetics in the study were not in the later stages of disease, researchers pinpointed the subjects’ weight as close to the time of diagnosis as possible. The authors also did not want to confuse normal – weight subjects with people who had been overweight or obese but then lost the weight after a diagnosis of diabetes. They found that people who had a normal BMI at the time diabetes was diagnosed were twice as likely to die during the study period, compared with heavier peers.

Dr Carnethon noted the findings were particularly important for Americans most at risk for normal weight diabetes, including blacks, people of Asian heritage and older adults. She said there may be a hereditary component to the phenomenon that causes some diabetics to be “genetically loaded,” with genetic variants that predispose them to diabetes and other illness. “It’s probable that these normal weight adults with diabetes have more abdominal adiposity,” or fat in the midsection. “That particular fat distribution is dangerous for metabolic disorders.”

An editorial on the findings should be viewed as a “wake-up call for timely prevention and management to reduce adverse outcomes in all patients with Type 2 diabetes.” the advice is relevant to normal – weight diabetics, “who may have a false sense of protection because they are not overweight or obese ,” said the editorial.

‘Man –made retina’ to help blind see

‘Man –made retina’ to help blind see
Visually –Impaired Mice Regain Sight thanks To Radical New Implant
Washington:   Scientists claim to have developed ‘artificial retina’ which could restore near – normal vision to the blind, a finding which can benefit millions.
Researchers made the blind mice see clearly with radical new implant and the creatures’ vision could track images and discern features.
This new approach provides hope for the 25 million people worldwide who suffer from blindness due to diseases of the retina.
The researchers say they have also cracked the code for a monkey retina, which is essentially identical to that of a human and hope to quickly design and test a device that blind humans can use.
As drug therapies help only a small fraction of this population, prosthetic devices are their best option for future sight.
“This is the first prosthetic that has the potential to provide normal or near - normal vision because it incorporates the code,” Dr Sheila Nirenberg, neuroscientist from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, said.
“We can make blind mouse retinas see and we’re moving as fast as we can to do the same in humans,” Nirenberg, who is honing the technique, said in a statement.
The technique, using high-tech spectacles containing a tiny camera rather than surgery, could be tested on people for the first time in just one to two years.
“It’s an exciting time. We can make blind mouse retains see, and we’re moving as fast as we can to do the same in humans,” said Nirenberg in a statement.
“This has all been thrilling, I can’t wait to get started on bringing this approach to patients,” she said.
The first beneficiaries are likely to be sufferers of age-related macular degeneration, the most common cause of blindness in the elderly.
There are few treatments and no cure for the condition which makes it difficult or impossible to carry out everyday tasks such as reading, driving and watching television.
Scientists have already created implantable chips that restore some vision. But Nirenberg says that her technique produces a much clearer picture. In fact, vision is close to normal.
Thanks,

Stents to cure chronic sinusitis

Stents to cure chronic sinusitis
Involves Insertion Of Small Wire Coated With Steroid Into The Cavity
New Delhi: For years, they have been used to open blocked arteries. In a novel approach, drug-eluting stents are now being used to cure chronic sinusitis which is not treatable with medicines. The technique with is also advisable for diabetics and those suffering from hypertension.
The producer, which involves insertion of a small tube-shaped wire coated with steroid solution into the sinus cavity, was recently conducted at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The patient – an orthopeadic surgeon at the hospital – is doing fine, claimed Dr Shalabh Sharma, the ENT surgeon.
“In the case of angioplasty, the stent remains inside the body. But here, we put the stent in the nasal passage – there is formation of grape- like swelling – and it is removed after four weeks. The main aim is to administrator low doses of steroids in the affected area and save the patient from the side-effects caused by a large quantity of steroids,” said Dr Sharma. He added that the stent can be inserted under local anesthesia, making it safe even for the elderly or those unfit for general anesthesia. “I was recently diagnosed with early stage sinusitis. Doctors prescribed high doses of steroids but I wasn't willing to go in for the treatment because of the numerous side-effects. So, when the ENT specialist suggested the stent option, I was more than happy to go for it,” said the 40-years –old patient.
“Sinusitis is caused by inflammation of the mucous membrane located in the face and nose region. It puts pressure on one eyes, nose and on one side of the head, resulting in a headache. The common causes of the disease include bacterial or viral infection, cold, allergies, airborne fungus, nasal or sinus obstruction, and respiratory tract infections,” said a senior doctor.
According to a recent report by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAD), one in eight Indians suffers from chronic sinusitis. “In most patients, the symptoms are controlled with oral medications and nasal spray. In about 15% cases, steroids do not work for various reasons and patient need to undergo surgical removal of the polyps. Drug eluting stents are less painful and more effective compared to surgery”, said Sharma.
However, the cost of surgery is a little steep. The stent itself comes for Rs 80,000 and the surgery costs about Rs 20,000.

Chewing on supari can get you diabetes

Those who like chewing supari as a mouth freshener now have another disease to worry about apart from cancer. Studies collated recently show that supari, or areca nut, can also cause metabolic syndromes, including obesity and diabetes.
“Out of eight studies (conducted at a Saudi university for 6-20 years), two associated areca nut chewing with hyperglycemia and type2 diabetes, while five reported an association with metabolic syndrome. Four studies related it with obesity and increased body mass index (BMI). Meanwhile, higher triacylglycerol levels were reported in one study among area nut chewers compared to non-chewers”. said the review.
According to it, the sample size of the selected studies ranged from 2010 to 56,116 individuals (their age range being 15-83 years). The frequency of areca nut chewing reported by the user ranged from1 to 76 times a day. Dr Pankaraj Chaturvedi from Tata Memorial Hospitals said, “Many animal studies have shown that feeding areca nuts to young adult mice induces permanent glucose intolerance in a significant proportion of the animals”.
“The new population based studies suggested an independent effect of areca nut chewing on the development of type 2 diabetes . Recent population survey data from UK, Papua New Guinea and Pacific Islands strengthen the argument for the diabetogenicity of areca nut use. ”
One of the studies included in the review (published in the medical journal Diabetologia), which was conducted in Taiwan in 2004, said an active arecal agent was directly toxic to beta cells, which store and release insulin.”Prevalence of hyperglycemia was found to be 11.4% in (areca nut) chewers and 8.7% in non-chewers.”Moreover compared, to non- chewers, the risk of type 2 diabetes was 1.41 times higher in those who had chewed areca nuts for more than 20 years and 2.02 times higher in those who had chewed more than 20 pieces of areca nuts per day”, the study started.
Another study, conducted in London and published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed a direct association between supari and waist size.
Nitrosamines –chemical compounds formed by the areca nut –are harmful for the human metabolic system. Doctors say that since crores of people chew supari in India, it is important to educate consumers and physicians about associations.

No More Knee Pain

Overuse of the Knee joint can lead to excruciating pain. Here's how you can deal with it.

Jayanthi Murahari.

Most people these days complain of Knee Pain. For Some it's a chronic problem and for others it's temporary. Though Knee pain is a common issue, the reason for the pain vary. The Knee joint is one of the most functional joints and also the most complex. It plays a major role in locomotion. The most common question is: how can a joint so much in use get so weak? That is exactly the problem: Overuse.

Unique joint

The Knee is a weight bearing joint and withstands large forces especially when running and jumping.Such activities can double and quadruple aNn individual's body weight; so even one kg weight gain can mean s four kh impact on the knees. A person who is overweight will end up with a bad knee pain .

The Knee joint is a unique hinge joint with an intricate design of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and cartilages. It connects the thigh bone (femur) to the lower leg bones (tibia and fibula).

Given the complexity, some knee problems can be hard to tell apart. There are various problems related to the joint. Here's looking at the most common.

The patella also known as the knee cap is held in place in front of the joint by tendons and ligaments. It glides over the joint when the knee is bent and extended. Patellar tracking disorder occurs when the knee cap shifts too far towards the outside of the leg or, in some cases, inside the leg.

It's very common for the patella not to glide properly when the knee is bent. If it moves out of its groove, pain is the result. If the patella is out of alignment, there is discomfort especially while going down down the stairs, sitting position or squatting. It feels like as if the knee cap is grinding, slipping, catching, buckling while bending or straightening up the leg.

Causes    : Over use in sports; anatomically the knee cap would be placed either too high or too low; prolonged sitting; activities that place undue stress on the knee cap alignment; a severe blow or fall; muscle imbalance or weakness (especially hamstring or calf muscles) and por foot posture.

Treatment : It's important to strengthen the muscles in front of the thighs (Quadriceps). As the name suggests it involves four muscles (rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis and intermedialis) that connect together. Strengthening the vastus medialis in particular may begin to resolve the problem.

Increase flexibility by regular stretching exercises. Plan a specific exercise plan with the doctor or physiotherapist. Stretching legs and hips both before and after any activity is important.

Cycling and swimming are also good options. Last but not the least, maintain ideal body weight.

DOn'ts

Don't bend the knee for a prolonged period.

Don't participate in high impact exercises such as running and climbing stairs.

Don't over use the knee joint.

Don't do deep squats.

TREAT YELLOWING NAILS

TREAT YELLOWING NAILS

Discolored and misshapen nails can be an indicator of various medical condition like disease of the liver, lungs and nutritional deficiencies. However, yellowing nails need not necessarily occur due to internal disorders. Here are some of others factors that can lead to discoloration of nails:

Nail fungus

If fungus sets under the nails, it might discolor your nails. Yellowing nails caused by fungal infections gradually become flaky and start emitting a foul odour as the fungus breaks down the components of the nail. An oral anti-fungal medication from your physician should solve your problem.

Smoking

Smoking never did anyone any good. Besides causing serious health problems, it can also cause yellow fingernails.

Always wearing nail polish

Perplexed why your nails are yellowing despite getting a manicure and pedicure regularly? Your obsession with looking well – groomed might be the main culprit behind your yellowing nails. Continual of use nail varnish deprives the nails of the oxygen needed to maintain their natural color. There’s no harm in getting a regular manicure – pedicure, but give the varnish a miss to let your nails breath every now and then.

Restore and treat

How do your restore the natural color of your nails?

Get your nails checked by a physician to rule out the possibility of a fungal infection and follow these simple steps for sparkling, healthy nails:

Soak your hands in a small bowl filled with warm water and soap for 10-15 minutes. This will loosen up dirt or grime on your nail bed, thereby making clean easier:

Use a nailbrush with soft bristles to clean your nails. Make sure to scrub over the nail bed as well as on the underside of the nails.

In another bowl, make a paste of lemon juice and baking soda. Scoop some of this mixture with your nailbrush and again scrub over the nail bed and the underside of  your nail. This helps whiten nails a  great deal.

Make sure to moisturize your hands and nails after this process since lemon can dry out your nails.

You can also use a cotton ball dipped in lemon essential oil on your fingernails and cuticles. It will gradually brighten your nails without drying them out. It also helps in nourishing your cuticles. Nails will gradually start looking healthier and whiter.

Always use a good quality base coat under your nail polish.

Avoid using bright reds, blacks and other dark nail paints too often as they tend to stain nails more than lighter colors.

Refrain from applying nail polish at all times. Given your nails a break in between polishes.

Garlic

GarlicGarlic is the edible bulb from a plant in the lily family. It has been used as both a medicine and a spice for thousands of years. Garlic’s most common uses as a dietary supplement are for high cholesterol, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Garlic is also used to prevent certain types of cancer, including stomach and colon cancers. Garlic cloves can be eaten raw or cooked. They may also be dried or powdered and used in tablets and capsules. Raw garlic cloves can be used to make oils and liquid extracts.

Garlic can slightly lower blood cholesterol levels and helps to lower blood pressure, particularly in people with high blood pressure. Garlic helps in process to slow the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), a condition that can lead to heart disease or stroke.

Consuming garlic as a regular part of the diet may lower the risk of certain cancers.

Side Effects and Cautions of Garlic:
Garlic appears to be safe for most adults. Side effects include breath and body odor, heartburn, upset stomach, and allergic reactions. These side effects are more common with raw garlic.

Garlic can thin the blood (reduce the ability of blood to clot) in a manner similar to aspirin. This effect may be a problem during or after surgery. Use garlic with caution if you are planning to have surgery or dental work, or if you have a bleeding disorder.

Aloe Vera

Chemical in Lipsticks can cause heart ailments

Los Angles: A chemical commonly used in lipsticks, hand washes and other personal-care products may cause heart problems and muscle impairment, a new study has claimed.
Scientists at the University of California have found that triclosan, Which is used in hundreds of house hold products, can hinder the process by which muscles, including the heart , receives the signal form the brain. In tests on mice, they noted a ‘dramatic’  25% reduction in heart function within 20 minutes of exposure, and warned there is ‘ strong evidence’ it could after human health.
However regulators and other experts insist  triclosan levels in products are safe, and that the does injected into the mice were higher than those to which humans would ever be exposed.
Previous studies have found that triclosan may  have links to thyroid and fertility problems, this is the first time its effects have been tested on muscles. Scientists had thought that the chemical - which was devised to prevent bacterial infection in hospitals- was metabolized quickly by the body without harmful effects.
However, the researchers at the University of California say it may remain active and be transported to organs, causing damage. “Triclosan is found in virtually every one’s home and is pervasive in the environment,” said professor Isaac Pessah,  who led the study.
“These findings provide strong evidence that  it is of concern to both human and environmental health.”

HOW TO DEAL A SHY PERSON

When talking to a shy person, it is important to follow certain guidelines so that you don’t intimidate or discourage them intimidate or discourage them while trying to have them open up to you.
Approach in a non – threatening manner, with a smiling, friendly expression.
Limit questions
When you do ask questions, avoid ones that are personal.
Be patient
Listen carefully to their answers and give positive feedback, such as, “That’s an interesting way  of looking at it!
Look for topics that seem to an Gage your friend.
Encourage them to feel comfortable with you so they will trust you.
Invite them to do something with you.
Express a positive impression of interacting  with them.
Don’t talk to them like they are stupid or weak.
Don’t stare at them or tease them about their shyness.
Tips
Speak in a soft or well – modulated voice, but still be loud enough to be heard clearly. If the shy person is talking very quietly or mumbling, talking loudly to them won’t help anything, and it may actually intimidate them into speaking even less clearly
Give them space. There is a certain distance for every person that they do not feel comfortable with others entering inside. Shy people almost always need more room, at least until they get to know you. If they tense or flinch when you come close to them, you've crossed the line. Take a step or two back.
Recognize that almost everyone is shy in some situations. Empathize with your shy friends; think of a             time when you had to give a speech in class or  talk to a group of people you didn't know. Remembered difficult It is, and appreciate their efforts.
Try to stick to subjects having to do with where you are at the time.
Don’t pressure a shy person  to contribute to a group conversation.
Shy people are usually sweet and nice people and sometimes sensitive. Don’t mess with them even as a joke because it might still hurt their feelings. Try to be genuinely nice, and they ‘ll usually be the same way back.
Calling  attention to the person’s shyness can make them feel uncomfortable.
A lot of shy people prefer to work alone, so don’t pressure them to work with someone else. Also, ask the person if they would like to work with you, they will most likely say sure. If ‘s just easier to say sure or okay. Don’t be offended if they actually tell you that they prefer to work alone though.
Be confident, but not overbearing.
Shy people tend to choose their words with care. When they say something, be sure to listen, and then think about what they said and the inflection they used before responding.
Many shy people have another side to them. If you happen to make friends with them, you may find that are loud, fun, and funny.
Keep in mind that shyness is usually not a choice. Some people learn to be shy. Get over your shyness if you truly want to. It will not happen overnight but by doing something socially challenging everyday. The choice is yours.
Warnings
Avoid touching them, at least until you become good friends.
If a shy person happens to find you attractive, he or she might take your interest in them as being more than just friendly conversation. Make sure you don’t give this impression. Some shy people may develop a very long term crush or even fall in love with you and not let you know for months or even years. If you suspect your shy friend might be attracted to you and you do not feel the same it as clear as possible early on. You will save them a lot of pain.

HAND WASHING TECHNIQUE

•Hand washing is the single most effective way reduce the number of microorganisms on the surface of the skin.
•Any wound or abrasion should be covered using a waterproof dressing
•There are water less alcohol based hand wash solutions that are as effective as soap and water hand washing.
These preparations contain an emollient and aid in reducing damage to the hands, but should only be used when there is no visible soiling of the hands. If there is visible soiling, then soap and water hand washing should be used as per the hand washing procedure.
•Keeping hands clean through improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.
•Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water.
•If clean, running water is not accessible, as is common in many parts of the world, use soap and available water. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol – based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands.
Hand washing should be performed:
•Before and after contact with a client,
•Before and after using gloves,
•Before contact with used equipment
•Before, during, and after p repairing food
•Before eating food
•Before and after caring for someone who is sick
•Before and after treating a cut or wound
•Before Inserting or removing contact lenses
•After using the toilet
•After changing diapers
•After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
•After touching an animal or animal waste
•After touching garbage.
