HYSTERECTOMY MADE EASY
Hysterectomy, removal of the woman’s uterus is one of the most common medical procedures performed. Previously, removal of the uterus was done through the birth canal and abdominally by a caesarean like large cut. Now, with advancement in technology, removal of the uterus is done through a key hole surgery called laparoscopy, this procedure is used to remove cancer of the uterus or cervix.
Hysterectomy is used to remove uterine fibroids which cause menorrhagia as well as in treating abnormal uterine bleeding, Endometriosis, uterine, uterine prolapse and cancer of the uterus, cervix and ovaries though only 10% of hysterectomy is performed for cancer.
SA proper diagnosis involving Pelvic examination, Papsmear and blood tests are done before proceeding with a hysterectomy. Pelvic ultrasound of pelvic is done to make a firm diagnosis along with a trial of medication before a hysterectomy is considered. In cases of abnormal uterine bleeding, a biopsy of the uterus is conducted to rule out cancer.
With abdominal hysterectomy, the recovery time for an open hysterectomy, the recovery time for an open hysterectomy is 4-6 weeks and sometimes longer due to the cutting of the abdominal wall and in the case of vaginal hysterectomy, the uterus is removed through the birth canal. Unlike the older procedure, there are no big incisions made in the abdomen or vagina. An incision of about one half inch is made in the belly button and a tiny camera and instruments are inserted through the incision. The camera transmits an image of the internal organs onto a television monitor; the surgeon uses this image to detach the uterus.
In the case of a small uterus, it is taken out from the birth canal else a special instrument called morcellator is used to reduce the tissue into small pieces before being taken out. Unlike older methods, in laparoscopy, smaller incision cause less damage to body tissue, organs, and muscles so the recovery time is greatly reduced from the 4-8 weeks required in the other procedure. Patients undergoing Laparoscopic hysterectomy can return home earlier with a brief stay in the hospital. There are no post operative complications and little or no pain medications required. One of the biggest advantage of the minimal scarring and minimal blood loss during the procedure; incision for most kinds for laparoscopic surgery heal without notice able scars and there is less chance of hernia formation.
