OSTEO ARTHRITIS is one of the most common and most ancient diseases in the world. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is projected to afflict over 14 million people in India. The disease affects joints as the Knees, hips shoulders and occurs more in women than in men. It is one of the leading causes of the disability in India having economic and quality of implications.
Mrs.Nandini Rao (name changed), a 65 -year old slightly overweight woman, with a seven-year history of progressively worsening Osteoarthritis presented herself with the following symptoms and was advised both Knees Replacement Surgery.
Pain in both knees. X-rays show reduction in joint space especially on the medial side and osteophyte formation. Pain is relatively less while sitting or lying down but pain is there.
Difficulty in walking for more than 10 minutes.
Reduced range of motion of both knees.
Lot of Crackling in both the knees.
Loss of confidence in walking - felt that her knees might "give way"
Lives with supportive sportive spouse but is losing contact with her community and social connections.
