Acne – Causes & Herbal Remedies

Acne or Yuvanapidaka is one of the skin problems spreading among the teenagers. When a person attains puberty the sebaceous gland becomes proactive, secreting excess sebum or oil that clog skin pores & inflame hair follicles resulting in a series of skin problem collectively named as acne. It may also be associated with secondary infections characterized by papules, pustules, cysts, scars, etc. There is very important role of androgen hormones & anaerobic  bacteria P.Aches in the manifestation of disease. Common sites are face, trunk, back & back of neck associated with excessive sebum secretion.

Causes of Acne Vulgaris (Yuvanapidika)

According to ayurveda it is described as papules appearing on face which resembles the sprouts on the bark of shalmali tree. This disease is manifested due to vitiation of kapha, vata & Rakta dosha. (Su.Ni. 13/38) Ayurveda  believes that yuvanapidika is caused due to intake of improper diet, disturbance in menstrual cycle & digestive tract. The cause of Acne may be listed as follows:-

Adhyashana- Unbalance eating hour’s  i.e.  intake of food at short intervals before digestion of previous food.

Virudhashan – Intake of incompatible food. E.G. Fish with milk.

Vishmashana – intake of food when not hungry & vice versa.

Consumption of fatty & fried food & excessive starch intake.

Inadequate water intake.

Heredity

Nutritional deficiency & improper cleaning of skin.

Use of irritant cosmetics.

Use of steroids & hormonal imbalance.

Chronic constipation.

Stress

Alcoholism, Tobacco & Caffeine intake.

Symptoms

1.       Lesions of acne are limited to face, shoulders, upper chest and back.

2.       Skin often remains greasy.

3.       The basic lesion in acne is called a comedo and is an enlarged hair follicle plugged with oil and bacteria.  When the comedo stays below the skin it is called a whitehead. When it reaches the surface of the skin and opens up it is called a blackhead.

4.       Papules (small inflamed lesions that look like pink bumps on the skin), pustules (pimples), nodules (large, sore, solid lesions deep in the skin) and cysts (deep, inflamed, pus-filled lesions) are other types of acne lesions.

5.       Cysts can cause serious scaring and deformity.

Treatment of Acne Vulgaris (Yuvanapidika)

Correction of dietary habits.

Intake of green leafy vegetables to avoid constipation.

Intake of sufficient amount of water, liquid juice etc. reduces dryness of intestine & drain out metabolic wastes.

Mild laxatives can also be advised to avoid constipation.

Herbal remedies for Yuvanapidaka:-

Apply paste of throns of shalmali, lodhra, vacha & gandhak.

Apply paste of haridra, lodhra, arjuna, nagkeshara, haritiki, avala, multani mitti & rosewater.

Haldi, rakta chandana & rose water paste application on Acne.

Lodhra, dhania, Vacha paste application.

Pound orange peel with water & apply the paste on acne.

Application of lemon juice or gratted cucumber is an effective.

Masura (lens culnaris) dal fried & pasted with milk & applied on face & kept for at least for an  hour. This helps to remove pimples spots & cleans the face.

Pudina (Menthe arventis) leaves extract juice out of it. Apply on face on over face every night & wash it with water every morning. If not only removes pimples & scars but also makes the skin soft & smooth.

Drugs like khadira, Lodhra, Manjistha etc rejuvenates the skin & act as blood purifiers.  

Medicated ghrit or tail can be used. E.G. kanaka tail, Manjistha tail, Varnaka ghrit, Kumkumadi tail etc.

Kaishore guggulu, Triphala guggulu, Arogya Vardhani Vati, Gandhak Rasayana can be given as these drugs also act as blood purifiers their by proves effective in treatment of disease.

Do’s & Don’ts

Avoidance of cause.

Proper cleaning of face. Wash face regularly 2 or 3 times by clean water.

Drink adequate water regularly.

It is necessary not to squeeze the acne or the pimples on the face. This precaution is a must when infected acne is present in the areas of lips. Also do not excoriate the acne.

No thick oily pastes should be applied as this oil close the pores on the skin & increases the problem.
