Parents can halve their child’s risk of tooth decay or dental caries by ensuring their children get enough of vitamin D every day. Vitamin D is essential for strong bones and teeth, but increasingly, people are deficit in the vitamin because they spend more time indoors away from sunlight. Certain conditions, such as obesity, also make it more difficult for the body to produce adequate amounts of the vitamin.
The best natural sources of vitamin D are fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, swordfish, and mackerel, along with foods fortified with the vitamin.
