AMLA (AMALKI)

“THE NATURAL ANTI – OXIDANT”

Latin Name – Emblica Officinalis
Family – Euphorbiaceae
Indian name – Amla, Amalki
Origin and Distribution:-
Indian gooseberry is a small or middle sized deciduous tree. The tree has pale green flowers usually in a small dense clusters below the leaves. The fruit are fleshy, round with its contour marketed into 6 lobes, about 1.5 to 2.5 cm in diameter and pale green or yellowish in color.
It has used as a valuable ingredient of various medicine in India and the middle East from time immemorial. Sushruta,  the great authority of an Ayuruta, considers the best of all acids fruits and most useful for  health and in treating sage Muni Chyawana rejuvenated himself in his late 70’s and gained virility with use. Acharaya Charka  says “Amalaki is   the best among rejuvenative herbs.”
Composition:-
Indian gooseberry contains on an average, moisture 81.8% protein 0.5% carbohydrate 13.7% fat 0.1% fibers 3.4% and minerals 0.5% per 100 gms of edible portion. Its mineral and vitamin contents include calcium, niacin and vit, C. The concentration of natural vitamin C is very high in Amla. Its cytoprotective action has been investigated. The Fruit juice has almost 20 times as much Vit – C. Its caloric value is 58. Repeated laboratory tests show every 100 gms of fresh fruit provides 470 to 680 mgs of vitamin C. The dehydrated berry provides 2428 to 3470 mgs of vitamin C per 100 grams. The seeds of the Indian gooseberry contain a fixed oil. The fruits, bark and the leaves of the tree are rich in tannin.
