HEALTH HAZARDS IN IT PROFESSIONALS

With rapidly changing work places, type of work, habits, life style, new groups of occupational health hazards are emerging. Traditional occupations effect mostly the physical health but new occupation especially in the information technology poses a new set of physical, mental, emotional, social, problems.

IT sector have given boom to Indian economy. Its contribution to Indian GDP has increased from 1.2% in 1997-98 to 5.8%in year 2008-2009 and rising continuously. If has also given a new face to India in developed world. IT professional have also  created a new life style but long working hours, less interpersonal interaction deadlines for jobs, long time working on computers, laptops, night shifts, sedentary life style, munching of fast food, feeling of insecurity etc are affecting psychological, physical well being of IT professionals.

Studies have shown that more than half of IT professional complains of headache, body, backache. Due to various reasons the smoking and alcohol consumption is very high in them. Studies done on 1000 IT professionals have revealed that 61% consume alcohol and 43% smoke. Long time usage joints postural, neurological problems in them. It is well known now that eye strain occur fly about 60 minutes of continuous working on minutes of continuous working on computers which on computer which lads to burning redness in eyes, irritation, problems in refocusing. Most of people working on computer do not blink so tear films are not formed, which leads to dry eyes. Eyes produced a new (CVS),disease entity called computer vision syndrome CVS, in various severity occur in 60-70% of IT professionals.

Back ache, neck pain, spondylitis  is wrist pain are also very common  IT professionals, due to wrong working habits on computer. Due to pressure of work, deadlines they may become irritable, may feel fatigue. Hearing problems are also more common in IT  professionals.

Sedentary life style, faulty eating habit and stress make them at higher risk to develop heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity.
IT professionals are also exposed to electromagnetic waves. Now it is proved that EMR by mobile phones lead to various diseases. Of course EMR emitted by computer and its accessories (Bluetooth, LAN, mobile phone etc) are in lesser amount than mobile phones, but people spend much long  time on computer, so harmful effects of EMR cannot be ruled out in IT professional.

Studies have also of depression, anxiety and other psychological diseases in IT professionals due to long hours of work shift duties, lack of recreation. Family and Social problem are more common in IT professionals take problems as pat of jobs and do nothing to alleviate the problems.

Health concerns in it professionals due to excessive computer Usage:-
IT professional have to spend most of  their  working  time  on computers. Due to excessive computer usage usually in faulty position, ways, they are likely position, ways, they are likely to suffer from computer vision syndrome (CVS), repetitive stress injuries, depression, carpal, tunnel syndrome spondylitis, neck, back shoulder pain, computer addiction etc.

They uses various electronic appliances for long period like laptop, desktop, computer, WI-Fi Bluetooth, printer, radiation in the range of 2.4 GHz. These EMR warm up the  tissues. Tissues  which can damage the tissues. It has been shown the EMR from mobile phones can lead to increase risk of brain  tumors  and other problems. Computer and other electronic appliances also emit the same type of waves of lower frequency, and we remain in contact with them for longer period so harmful effects of EMR emitted by computer and its accessories can not be ruled out.
Body tissue has its own electrical, which is necessary for normal body functioning. EMR emitted by these electrical appliances can alter normal electrical currents in the body and can harm us. One of U.K. university Lake heads president is of the 2.4 GHz radio waves used in wireless network, that he has prohibited it from the campus of university. He believes that WI-Fi can increase permeability of the blood, brain, barrier, causing behavior and cognitive, they interfere other brain functions and cell growth etc. while Dr.Gorg Carlo world renowned epidemiologist believe that EMR negatively effects the body cell functions and capacity to repair damage  of EMR emitted by computer appliances do not have any harmful effect on human body. It  is now proved that cell phones which  emit higher level of EMR than computers have harmful  effects. But most of IT professional remains in contact with them for longer period so the harmful effects of EMR emitted by totally ruled out.

Psychological problems:-
IT professional usually have long working hours, less interpersonal activities and stressful life due to deadlines insecurity, irregular  unregulated life, night shift which can cause various psychological behavioral problems. They become unstable irritable, may suffer from anxiety, depression or other psychological problems. Studies have shown that IT professionals have higher incidence of family discord.
Beside the IT professionals may have irregular working hours especially in shift workers. They spend sedentary life; usually eat lot of junk/ fast food, so they are more likely to suffer from spondylitis, heart problems, obesity and obesity related health problems. Many IT professionals may be force to leave their jobs because of health, psychological or family reasons.

Necessary health initiatives for IT professional:-
* About 45 minutes aerobic exercise daily yogic exercise can relieve stress, keep the joint, muscle lax and healthy
* Spend some relaxing time with family, friends. Never think that you are too tired and can't friends.
* Do meditation and take part in religious activates.
* Eat healthy nutritious foods say no to junk food. Better to eat homemade food instead of cafeteria food. Cafeteria should have healthy choice.
* Take regular breaks from your our computer in office follow 20-20-20- rule. Take 20 seconds break every 20 minutes and look 20 feed away   toward window, sky, and blink, stretch your body.
* Forget about your work when out of office.
* Don 't use credit card as far as possible to avoid over spending, and over stretching yourself financially.
* Office should have ergonomic designed furniture, work station, proper air conditioning, and air flow, temperature, oxygen content, and lightening.
* Office should also have adequate exercise facility.
* Healthy food should be saved in cafeteria.
* When working keep you neck, back straight, arms by side of body, wrist straight. Give support to back, don 't use keyboard mouse with   force.

Till now most IT Company have not adopted health of their employees as priority many company have started taking health initiative for their workers. It is believed  that in next few years the health problems of IT workers as well as for company, to keep IT productive, efficient.

Technology is improving by leaps and bound. India has over 20 lakh IT professionals. They are at risk of many physical, mental, emotional problems. They need to be aware of the problems and must take adequate precautions, so they remain healthy, active.
