Mushroom

MushroomMushrooms have been used for thousands of years both as food and for medicinal purposes. They are often classified as a vegetable or a herb, but they are actually fungi. The color, shape and size of the fruiting body can vary tremendously. It is important to properly identify the mushroom that is collected, so as to avoid a poisonous species.

Mushrooms contain about 80 to 90 percent water, and are very low in calories (only 100 cal/oz). They have very little sodium and fat, and 8 to 10 percent of the dry weight is fiber. Hence, they are an ideal food for persons following a weight management program or a diet for hypertensives.  Mushrooms are an excellent source of potassium, a mineral that helps lower elevated blood pressure and reduces the risk of stroke. Mushrooms are a rich source of riboflavin, niacin, and selenium. Selenium is an antioxidant that works with vitamin E to protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.

The latest findings show that white button mushrooms can reduce the risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer. An extract of white button mushrooms decreased cell proliferation and decreased tumor size in a dose-dependent manner. Mushroom stimulates the immune system, helps fight infection, and demonstrates anti-tumor activity. The health benefits of mushroom include relief from high cholesterol levels, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and diabetes. It also helps in weight loss.

A single poisonous mushroom among others can send a whole lot of people to coma, induce severe poisoning symptoms, nausea, vomiting, convulsions, cramps, insanity or worst, can kill them. Avoid eating discolored mushrooms or those which are different in color than the characteristic color of their species.

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) alias Upper Endoscopy

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) alias Upper EndoscopyUpper endoscopy is a procedure that enables to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum  using a thin, flexible tube through which the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum can be viewed using a TV monitor.

Prior to scheduling the procedure, the patient should inform the physician of any medications they are currently taking, any allergies and all of their health problems. This information will remind the doctor whether the patient may need antibiotics prior to the procedure, what potential medications should not be used during the exam because of the patient's allergies and to whether any of the medications they are taking should be held or adjusted prior to the endoscopy.

Upper endoscopy usually is performed to evaluate possible problems such as upper abdominal pain, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing, intestinal bleeding anemia, etc.,

Upper Endoscopy is more accurate than X-Ray it is to treat  many of the conditions such as stretching areas of narrowing (strictures), removal of benign growths such as polyps, accidentally swallowed objects, or treating upper gastrointestinal bleeding as seen in ulcers tears of the lining. These capabilities have reduced the need for transfusions or surgery.

“The Fruit of the Angels”

“Papaya” is recommended to be one such pick from the group of Yellow and orange fruits, which has lots of health benefits. Papayas are a power fruit .Papaya is not only a delicious fruit to eat and has medicinal value. Papaya can be eaten as a fruit, a smoothie or even a milkshake.

It is rich in Anti-oxidants, the B vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals, potassium and magnesium; and fiber. Together, “these nutrients promote the health of the cardiovascular system and also provide protection against colon cancer.” In addition, papaya contains the digestive enzyme, papain, which is used like bromelain, a similar enzyme found in pineapple, to treat sports injuries, other causes of trauma, and allergies. Vitamin C and vitamin A, which is made in the body from the beta-carotene in papaya, are both needed for the proper function of a healthy immune system. Papaya may therefore be a healthy fruit choice for preventing such illnesses as recurrent ear infections, colds and flu.

This highly loved tropical fruit was reputably called “The Fruit of the Angels” by Christopher Columbus. In the 20th century, papayas were brought to the United States and have been cultivated in Hawaii, the major U.S. producer since the 1920s. Today, the largest commercial producers of papayas include the United States, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Papaya contains the digestive enzyme papain and therefore valuable for aiding digestion. The unique protein-digesting enzymes; papain and chymopapain have been shown to help lower inflammation and to improve healing from burns in addition to helping in digestion of proteins. The antioxidant nutrients found in papaya, including vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, are also very good at reducing inflammation. The ripe fruit is easily digestible and prevents constipation. Case studies indicate that this food taken alone for two or three days has a highly beneficial tonic effect upon the stomach and intestines.

The juice of the papaya aids in relieving infections of the colon and has a tendency to break down pus and mucus reached by the juice. May help prevent cancer in organs and glands with epithelial tissue (ripe papaya). Papaya’s fiber is able to bind to cancer-causing toxins in the colon and keep them away from the healthy colon cells. In addition, papaya’s folate, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and vitamin E have each been associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer, prevents nausea.

The seeds are antihelmintic, for expelling worms and they are given with honey. Chew and swallow two teaspoonfuls of seeds after each principal meal (three times a day). Papayas may be very helpful for the prevention of atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease. Papayas are an excellent source of vitamin C as well as a good source of vitamin E and vitamin A (through their concentration of pro-vitamin A carotenoids phytonutrients), three very powerful antioxidants. Papayas are also a good source of fiber, which has been shown to lower high cholesterol levels.

Chemotherapy

ChemotherapyChemotherapy is the treatment of cancer with an anti neoplastic drug or with a combination of such drugs into a standardized treatment regimen. Chemotherapy acts by killing cells that divide rapidly, one of the main properties of most cancer cells. This also harms cells that divide rapidly under normal circumstances, cells in the bone marrow, digestive tract and hair follicles. This results in the most common side effects of chemotherapy decreased production of blood cells, inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract and hair loss.  Damage to healthy cells may cause side effects. Often, side effects get better or go away after chemotherapy is over. Chemotherapy, often shortened to just "chemo," is a systemic therapy, which means it affects the whole body by going through the bloodstream.

A combination of two or more medicines will be used as chemotherapy treatment which means you get two or three different medicines at the same time. In some cases, chemotherapy is given before surgery to shrink the cancer so that less tissue has to be removed. When chemotherapy is given before surgery, it's called "neoadjuvant" chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy is always recommended if there is cancer in the lymph nodes, regardless of tumor size or menopausal status. Breast cancer in premenopausal women tends to be more aggressive, so chemotherapy is often part of the treatment plan. For some women chemotherapy is recommended to diagnose with early-stage breast cancer if the cancer is hormone-receptor-negative and HER2-positive.

During chemotherapy, maintaining adequate nutrition is to minimizing deficiency and optimizing your immune system, strength and treatment tolerance. Various cancer treatments may affect patients nutritionally. Add protein in your diet because protein is an important component of good nutrition, increase foods like cheese, ice cream, milk, eggs, peanut butter and others that can help you get the protein your diet needs during chemotherapy.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

carpal tunnel syndromeCarpal tunnel syndrome is pressure on the median nerve -- the nerve in the wrist that supplies feeling and movement to parts of the hand and provides feeling and movement to the "thumb side" of the hand. It can lead to numbness, tingling, weakness, or muscle damage in the hand and fingers. The area in your wrist where the nerve enters the hand is called the carpal tunnel. This tunnel is normally narrow, so any swelling can pinch the nerve and cause pain, numbness, tingling or weakness. This is called carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is common in people who perform repetitive motions of the hand and wrist. Typing on a computer keyboard is probably the most common cause of carpal tunnel. Other causes include Sewing, Driving, Assembly line work, Painting, , Writing, Use of tools (especially hand tools or tools that vibrate), Sports such as racquetball or handball, Playing some musical instruments.

The condition occurs most often in people 30 to 60 years old, and is more common in women than men.
A number of medical problems are associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, including Bone fractures and arthritis of the wrist, Acromegaly, Diabetes, Alcoholism, Hypothyroidism, Kidney failure and dialysis, Menopause, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and pregnancy, Infections, Obesity, Rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erithamatous (SLE), and scleroderma.

The symptoms are Numbness or tingling in the thumb and next two or three fingers of one or both hands, Numbness or tingling of the palm of the hand, Pain extending to the elbow, Pain in wrist or hand in one or both hands, Problems with fine finger movements in one or both hands, Wasting away of the muscle under the thumb, Weak grip or difficulty carrying bags (a common complaint), Weakness in one or both hands.
During a physical examination, the doctor may find numbness in the palm, thumb, index finger, middle finger, and thumb side of the ring finger, Weak hand grip, Tapping over the median nerve at the wrist may cause pain to shoot from the wrist to the hand, Bending the wrist forward all the way for 60 seconds will usually result in numbness, tingling, or weakness.

Tests may include electromyography, nerve conduction velocity, Wrist x-rays should be done to rule out other problems. Wearing a splint at night for several weeks will be the treatment. If this does not help, you may need to try wearing the splint during the day. Avoid sleeping on your wrists. Hot and cold compresses may also be recommended.

There are many changes you can make in the workplace to reduce the stress on your wrist:  Special devices include keyboards, different types of mouses, cushioned mouse pads, and keyboard drawers. Someone should review the position you are in when performing your work activities. For example, make sure the keyboard is low enough so that your wrists aren't bent upward while typing. Your doctor may suggest an occupational therapist. You may also need to make changes in your work duties or recreational activities. Some of the jobs associated with carpal tunnel syndrome include those that involve typing and vibrating tools. Carpal tunnel syndrome has also been linked to professional musicians.

Medications used in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen. Corticosteroid injections, given into the carpal tunnel area, may relieve symptoms for a period of time. Carpal tunnel release is a surgical procedure that cuts into the ligament that is pressing on the nerve. Surgery is successful most of the time, but it depends on how long the nerve compression has been occurring and its severity.

Avoid or reduce the number of repetitive wrist movements whenever possible. Use tools and equipment that are properly designed to reduce the risk of wrist injury. Ergonomic aids, such as split keyboards, keyboard trays, typing pads, and wrist braces, may be used to improve wrist posture during typing. Take frequent breaks when typing and always stop if there is tingling or pain.
