There’s a whole science to avoiding corns, calluses and keeping your feet butter soft. The Egyptians would know, as would a podiatrist.
With the monsoon for company over the next few months. We suggest you turn your attention from your face to your feet. The bias against peds is evident even among the glamorous. Let alone. The rest of us. Leaving a section of medic experts miffed. Your feet are as precious as you face. Podiatrists will tell you.
Physicians dedicated to the professional treatment of feet. Podiatrists have been around since 2400 BC. It’s wall carvings on he tomb of physician Ankhmahor that led experts to believe that ancient Egyptians were particular about keeping their feet happy. Roman scientist Aulus Cornelius Celsus was probably responsible for giving corns their name.
American president Abraham Lincoln is known to have suffered with imperfect feet. And chose a podiatrist named Isachar Zacharie. Who was also sent by the government on confidential missions to confer with lease of the confederacy ruing the US Civil War.
Hyderabad – based podiatrist Dr Jayesh Kamar may not have been on a dangerous mission involving national security. But he has spent 16 years helping Indians keep their feet healthy.
In a chat with Life! he tells us how he goes about doing that.
Most people don’t know what I do: There is hardly any awareness in India about foot care. But gradually. I see it improving
need to visit a podiatrist You when : You suffer from heel cracks, ingrown toe nails, infected nails, corns and calluses, burning or tingling in the soles of your feet, and heel pain.
Don’t blame bacteria: Be particularly careful in the rains, dampness promotes growth of bacteria, especially in the web spaces (between your toes). This can progress to limb – threatening infections.
Let your breathe feet: Cloth or leather shoes worn with socks work better than plastic since they allow the feet to breathe. I’d suggest you dry your feet as soon as possible in case of wet weather, and open up your floaters /sandals for short periods twice or three times in the day in the day to air your feet.
You can afforded to lose the glass slipper: plastic footwear should be avoided. Shoes must have a soft insole, and offer appropriate arch support. Low heels ( not more than two inches ) and preferably a heel counter ( a support behind the heel ) help. It does not matter whether you wear open or closed shoes, as long as you follow foot hygiene.
Save the evening for shoe shopping : If you are planning to buy anew pair of shoes, do it in the evening, in foot size that could occur due to swelling during the day. A shoe once tried on must not hurt or pinch at the time of purchase. There is on such thing as a breaking period for a shoe; it must be comfortable the very time you first try it on.
Get your kid those gumboots: Gumboots can be worn by children, but they must be reminded to dry their feet in case water enters their shoes. A minimum of two pairs of shoes should be available to them so that they can be aired for use the next day. As sum light is scarce during the monsoon, it is best if you leave your shoes under a fan overnight.
Clean between Your toes: Check your feet every morning and evening. Check for cuts, injuries o wetness in the web spaces. Wash your feet twice a day with a mild soap, and dry them thoroughly. The web spaces should be kept dry with a towel. You could also use a eau de cologne or after shave lotion there, In case you develop cracks in you soles, scrub them gently with a pumice stone and apply a moisturizing cream, but do not use astringents and chemicals. The same is true for corns and calluses. Avoid using commercially available corn caps, especially if you are diabetic.
Permission to play in the puddle: Pusses ( that aren’t clogged with rubbish or sewage ) do no more harm to kids than playing in a playground would. Children will be children. Simply splashing in the rein does not mean they are going to catch a disease.
Don ‘t ignore foot pain : No pain in the feet can be considered normal. It must be evaluated by an expert. Simple heaviness at the end of the day. After standing or working hard, usually settles down after resting. If it become a regular feature, visit a medical expert.
