Tobacco and health
In the current scenario, due to mental tension, emotional disturbances, chaos and confusion associated with life, people resort to temporary stress relievers like alcohol, drudges or tobacco.
Tobacco consumption is the most common addiction throughout the world. Tobacco smoke contains 4,000 chemical constituents which are hazardous to health. Over 50 cancer accelerating agents – carcinogens which cause cancer of lungs, lips, tongue and oral cavity are also identified.
Five per cant of the total gas in cigarette smoke is carbon monoxide and nicotine. CO has 200 times greater affinity to hemoglobin than oxygen and thus reduces the supply of oxygen to cardiac muscles, lungs, brain and the body indirectly causing unnecessary strain on the heart. The CO and nicotine mixture increases the heart and B.P., which in turn strain the heart and blood vessels. Nicotine increases the need of oxygen by heart muscle. Nicotine has an adverse effect on plasma lipids, increasing cholesterol and stimulates sharp release of adrenaline which in turn increases heart rate and blood pressure. It also acts on nervous system and creates. It also acts on nervous system and creates addiction. Also, it increases adhesiveness of platelets causing attacks, stoke, decreases blood flow to hands and legs.
People who smoke around 20 cigarettes a day are 25 times more prone to lung cancer and 10 times more prone to emphysema and prone to emphysema and chronic bronchitis, peptic ulcer, acidity and stomach cancer. Smoking during pregnancy rates and abortion. Passive smoking i.e. the effect of this addiction on there people around cannot be ignored.
Thus, smoking is a slow – killer. Hence, the idea of smoking as an energy booster, will – power increaser, relaxer and stress reliever is not right. Realization that smoking causes permanent damage to various systems and making a strong decision to quit and improve the quality of life by taking medical treatment, counseling and Raja Yoga Meditation is the need of the hour: Meditation helps a person gain spiritual interactions. Our attitudes towards relationships become more tolerant and positive. Thus, we experience stability, judgment and peace of mind under all adverse conditions.

WHO’S A PODIATRIST & what can he tell you about foot – perfecting for the rains?
There’s a whole science to avoiding corns, calluses and keeping your feet butter soft. The Egyptians would know, as would a podiatrist.
With the monsoon for company over the next few months. We suggest you turn your attention from your face to your feet. The bias against peds is evident even among the glamorous. Let alone. The rest of us. Leaving a section of medic experts miffed. Your feet are as precious as you face. Podiatrists will tell you.
Physicians dedicated to the professional treatment of feet. Podiatrists have been around since 2400 BC. It’s wall carvings on he tomb of physician Ankhmahor that led experts to believe that ancient Egyptians were particular about keeping their feet happy. Roman scientist Aulus Cornelius Celsus was probably responsible for giving corns their name.
American president Abraham Lincoln is known to have suffered with imperfect feet. And chose a podiatrist named Isachar Zacharie. Who was also sent by the government on confidential missions to confer with lease of the confederacy ruing the US Civil War.
Hyderabad – based podiatrist Dr Jayesh Kamar may not have been on a dangerous mission involving national security. But he has spent 16 years helping Indians keep their feet healthy.
In a chat with Life! he tells us how he goes about doing that.
Most people don’t know what I do: There is hardly any awareness in India about foot care. But gradually. I see it improving
need to visit a podiatrist You when : You suffer from heel cracks, ingrown toe nails, infected nails, corns and calluses, burning or tingling in the soles of your feet, and heel pain.
Don’t blame bacteria: Be particularly careful in the rains, dampness promotes growth of bacteria, especially in the web spaces (between your toes). This can progress to limb – threatening infections.
Let your breathe feet: Cloth or leather shoes worn with socks work better than plastic since they allow the feet to breathe. I’d suggest you dry your feet as soon as possible in case of wet weather, and open up your floaters /sandals for short periods twice or three times in the day in the day to air your feet.
You can afforded to lose the glass slipper: plastic footwear should be avoided. Shoes must have a soft insole, and offer appropriate arch support. Low heels ( not more than two inches ) and preferably a heel counter ( a support behind the heel ) help. It does not matter whether you wear open or closed shoes, as long as you follow foot hygiene.
Save the evening for shoe shopping : If you are planning to buy anew pair of shoes, do it in the evening, in foot size that could occur due to swelling during the day. A shoe once tried on must not hurt or pinch at the time of purchase. There is on such thing as a breaking period for a shoe; it must be comfortable the very time you first try it on.
Get your kid those gumboots: Gumboots can be worn by children, but they must be reminded to dry their feet in case water enters their shoes. A minimum of two pairs of shoes should be available to them so that they can be aired for use the next day. As sum light is scarce during the monsoon, it is best if you leave your shoes under a fan overnight.
Clean between Your toes: Check your feet every morning and evening. Check for cuts, injuries o wetness in the web spaces. Wash your feet twice a day with a mild soap, and dry them thoroughly. The web spaces should be kept dry with a towel. You could also use a eau de cologne or after shave lotion there, In case you develop cracks in you soles, scrub them gently with a pumice stone and apply a moisturizing cream, but do not use astringents and chemicals. The same is true for corns and calluses. Avoid using commercially available corn caps, especially if you are diabetic.
Permission to play in the puddle: Pusses ( that aren’t clogged with rubbish or sewage ) do no more harm to kids than playing in a playground would. Children will be children. Simply splashing in the rein does not mean they are going to catch a disease.
Don ‘t ignore foot pain : No pain in the feet can be considered normal. It must be evaluated by an expert. Simple heaviness at the end of the day. After standing or working hard, usually settles down after resting. If it become a regular feature, visit a medical expert.

GM bacteria prevents malaria transmission
In a breakthrough, US. Scientists have genetically modified a bacterium to kill the parasite that causes malaria before it infects humans. Researches at Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute said their breakthrough could help prevent mosquitoes from transmitting malaria to humans. Malaria kills over 800,000 people worldwide every year, most of them are children. In the new study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers modified the bacterium, called Pantoea agglomerans, to secrete proteins that are toxic to the malaria parasite, but not harmful to the mosquito or humans. The bacterium is commonly found in the mosquito’s midgut. It was found that the modified bacteria were 98 per cent effective in reducing the malaria parasite burden in the insects, the researchers said.

No need to panic
The fist reaction to a diagnosis of cancer is denial. But cancer is curable if caught early enough.
DR.N. NARASIMHAN
Many people believe that some diseases are common only in the West and that they will never make an entry in our country. Respiratory problem? It has to be bronchitis or asthma. Chronic case? It has to be tuberculosis.
If offered a lung cancer diagnosis, the response is a denial: “There is no family history of cancer , I don’t smoke…” Even after the diagnosis is made people will contact relatives in the U.S. for a second opinion and ask for case history and records to be sent there. The end result: treatment is delayed.
Cancer is curable if diagnosed early. One need not think that he/she can not get cancer. We swim through a sea of carcinogens every day. Breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer have seen defeat if diagnosed early.
Late diagnosis
That brings us to an important point. Most lung cancer cases are diagnosed either in the third or fourth stage. When the disease is not treatable. Lung cancer has the highest earth rate. Unfortunately it is not also the cancer that can be prevented if smoking is completely banned. Both active and passive smokers would benefit. People working with industrial chemicals like asbestos, uranium and arsenic should take care to reduce their exposure. Air pollution, especially automobile gases, and drinking water with high arsenic content also can predispose to cancer.
Nine out of 10 deaths are caused by lung cancer. Cigarette smoking not only causes cancer but also disarms the lung’s natural deface mechanisms; hair – like microscopic structures called cilia. This allows carcinogens to enter the lungs easily.
Some regular smokers ask if they can be screened for lung cancer. Studies have not shown if screening for lung caner is useful. But those with symptoms should get a CT scan if necessary with a dye injection. After this there will be other procedures like sputum examination, broncho scope or lung biopsy depending on the physician’s advice.
There are surgical and medical options. Thanks to medical improvement, molecular diagnosis and personalized therapies are available. Consult an oncologist.
Despite all the medical expertise and treatment options, it is the attitude of the patient and family – nod the diagnosis – that makes a huge difference. One of my patients who had been diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago came to me with fluid in the lung covering. The Diagnosis was malignancy. As I was explaining her treatment plan, she asked me what would happen to her vacation. She had planned a vacation with her family long before this diagnosis Was made. Neither her family members nor she was prepared to cancel the holiday. They would not let the diagnosis dampen their spirit.
Thank You

U.S.Approves Anti - HIV Drug
WASHINGTON: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration this week gave its first every nod for an anti-HIV drug, Truvada, to pharmaceutical firm Gilead Sciences. However, the move was greeted with skepticism in some quarters, particularly from AIDS Healthcare foundation – the U.S.’ largest HIV/ AIDS non –profit medical provider – which described the FDA decision as “reckless”.
Truvada is known chemically as a fixed-dose, daily in take combination of emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. Since 2004, it has been marketed as a treatment for those already infected with HIV. However, beginning in 2010, clinical studies demonstrated that the drug could prevent people from contracting the infection.
According to some public health advocates, these studies show that Truvada could be a preventive measure fro high – risk individuals such as those with HIV – positive partners – only when combined with sexual health counseling and the use of condoms.
In particular, reports cited a three – year study showing that a daily intake of Truvada reduced the ‘risk of infection in healthy gay and bisexual men by 42 per cent when accompanied, by condoms and counseling”. In 2011,another study found that Truvada reduced infection by 75 per cent in heterosexual couples in which one partner was infected, according to reports.
However, Michael Weinstein, co-founder and president of the AHF, argued that healthy individuals should be required to show proof of a negative HIV test before getting Truvada as a preventive medicine. “If it” s that important, why isn’t it a requirement?’’ he was quoted as saying.
One of Mr. Weinstein biggest concerns is that close to 21 per cent of HIV – positive individuals in the U.S. were said to be unaware of their infection. If they did not get tested before taking Truvada as prevention, “there is a possibility that the HIV strains they might spread these strains to treatment – and that they might spread these strains unknowingly to their partners.” Also, the requirement that it be taken daily may be too onerous and skipped dosages could thus resistant HIV strains may emerge, the AHF has noted.
Yet, announcing the FDA’s approval, the agency’ s Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said, “Today’s approval marks an important mile – stone in our fight against HIV… Every year, about 50,000 U.S. adults and adolescents are diagnosed with HIV infection, despite the availability of prevention methods and strategies to educate, test, and care for people living with the disease.

Artificial ‘heart’ beats for 52-yr-old
Man kept Alive On Ventricular Assist Device As Doctors Repair Valves
New Delhi: for four days, Ravinder Kumar (52) lived without a heart, literally. In order to repair a serious defect in his valves, doctors had to replace the organ – which was too weak to even pump blood – with an artificial device.
Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), a machine which mimics the heat’s functions, offers a ray of hope to thousands of patients whose hearts are too weak to survive a life – saving surgery and those waiting for heart transplant, say doctors. In waster countries like the US, research is on to develop the miniature version of the machine into a mechanical circulatory support device which can permanently replace the natural heart.
“The heart and lung machine which is commonly used to support organs during cardiac surgeries, also works on the same principle but it can only function for four to six hours. Also, prolonged use can cause severe side –effects which may eventually lead to death due to heavy bleeding. On the other hand, LVADs can pump blood for doctor to correct the heart defect,” said Dr Sujoy Shad, senior consultant cardiac surgeon at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital who conducted the successful surgery.
He said that Kumar was brought to the hospital in a state of shock because of severe choking in the main valve of his heart an leakage in another valve. His heart had lost its pumping power
“Despite powerful medications, his blood pressure hovered at 70-80 mm Hg. His heart was working at only 15% of its normal capacity. He may not have survived for more than a week if it wasn’t for the surgery. The leaking valve was repaired and the aortic valve which had constricted to the size of a pinhole causing restriction in flow of blood was replaced D Sanjiv Dhawan, senior consultant cardiologist at the hospital.
Doctors said that in Kumar’s case LVAD was used for five days to perform the heart’s functions like ensuring optimum supply of blood to other organs.
“The patient can breathe now; he is also able to walk and talk. He will be discharged soon,” said Dr D S Rana, chairman, sir Ganga Ram Hospital . He added that not all heart failure patients need to undergo a transplant as doctors can repair the damage with the help of new age techniques.
Kumar’s son Vikrant Kumar, who was ecstatic with the outcome of the surgery, said, “We tried to sell the house to pay for the money for us, “he said.
Dr Ashok Seth, chairman of cardiovascular sciences at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute was among the first doctors to use LVAD for treating heart failure patients in India. He implanted the derive in an 82- year-old patient suffering from blockage in three arteries in 2007.
Doctors at AIMS have also conducted similar procedures. “We have operated seven patients using LVA. One patient recently underwent a transplant also, “said Dr A K Bisoi, senior cardiac surgeon.
